Join leading nonprofit professionals and youth workers from around the globe as we gather to reflect upon and improve our practice, deepen our relationships and refresh ourselves as practitioners dedicated to serving young people.
Just in case you have been working hard and enjoying your summer and didn't catch this development, we wanted to make everyone aware of recent events involving problems at Mexican Resorts, specifically, the Iberostar Paraiso del Mar. Currently, our plans for the Symposium have not changed, but everyone needs to be aware of this situation.
This month, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal conducted an investigation into the January death of a 20-year old at the Iberostar Paraiso del Mar in Playa del Carmen. This is a separate section of the larger resort where we will be holding the Youth Worker Symposium on The Sea.
Here is the link to an article that explains and continues to explore the situation AND has links to other actions that have been taken by the resort, the Mexican government, and our State Department.
Our travel agent, Lora has been in contact with her industry reps and the resort itself, where she has received assurances about attention to safety and responsible action on their part.
Since there is a lot information, facts, opinion and perspective going around, we will all need to pay attention to sources and form our own opinions.
This all serves as more than a gentle reminder for us to be vigilant about our safety as travelers and to keep our attention ON. Lora, our travel agent, always recommends that travelers consider travel insurance, if there might be any concern about care or the potential cost of medical attention. You can contact her for more information. lora "at" lgretreats.com
As a reminder, the deadline to cancel your reservations with Lora without penalty IS July 31st, (which we have a couple days of wiggle room if you need to talk with us about this.) Also, if you needed to, anyone can cancel by Sept 1 and only have to pay a one night penalty with the resort.
We will continue to monitor information and responses and if anything significantly changes, we will, of course, let everyone know ASAP. Remember, there are over 100 of us traveling together with our colleagues, families and friends. Safety is our top priority. We look forward to having a spectacular experience together in November.
